The 40 mm focal length has become very popular, and for good reason; it's a focal length that has the popular traits of both wide lenses and tight lenses at the same time.
Best 40mm Lenses for Sony
These are our best 40mm lenses for Sony cameras right now:
1. Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art - (Sony E Mount)
This lens is almost magical, as it's one of Sigma's sharpest lenses ever made while at the same time being very fast at f/1.4. This is my own favorite 40mm lens that I always have in my backpack.
It's just a fantastic lens that truly boosts my creative confidence and always gives me tack sharp images.
✅ Very fast at f/1.4
✅ Sharpest 40mm lens
✅ Great contrast
✅ Small to non-existent vignetting
⚠️ Rather costly
⚠️ Kind of heavy
2. Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G
If you want a much cheaper 40mm lens for your Sony camera, Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G is an excellent choice. It is not quite as fast as our winner at f/1.4, but 2.5 is good enough for most situations and the lens is much smaller due to the slower aperture.
This lens is highly recommended by us and will give you excellent images, whether you're shooting photos or videos. You will not get the fastest alternative, but still a very good one.
✅ Very compact
✅ Reasonable price
✅ Good performance
✅ Covers full frame
⚠️ Cat-eyed bokeh in the corners
3. Sigma 40mm T1.5 FF - (Sony E)
This cinema lens is rated at T1.5 and covers full frame. it's just as sharp as the 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art but also has a cinema housing, allowing the use of follow focus accessories for both automatic and manual focus pulls.
✅ Very fast at T1.5
✅ Covers full frame
⚠️ Very expensive
Why 40mm Lenses?
When it comes to focal lengths, a lower value is wider than a higher value — a lens with a 24 mm focal length is much wider than a lens with a 50 mm focal length. However, you might want something in between the wide and the tight lens, and that makes a 40 mm lens an excellent choice; it's both wide and tight at the same time.
Full Frame vs Crop
When you use a 40 mm lens on a Sony crop sensor, the focal length is the same as (40 * 1.6) = 64 mm on a full frame body, because the sensor is smaller in the crop sensor cameras.
